Deciding to plant a Vegetable Garden....
hmmmm well, we are of two minds, but we have committed to planting a vegetable garden in the hopes that it will positively impact our savings in the area of purchasing fresh vegetables. We think we have have bitten off more that we can chew, and we have even changed our mind about WHERE to have the garden. On our receipts for the week September 24 - 28, 2012, the total spend for vegetables was 15% of our overall grocery spend, and the total spend for fruit was 14%. As we move further into summer, the cost of vegetables and fruit will come down, making that percentage even LESS - so we are left wondering if after taking the cost of creating the garden into consideration, if we will be left with much, if ANY savings... fingers crossed we will! It will be a learning process to be sure.

This was our starting point - we thought it would be lovely to have the garden off the deck, however, after sitting out on the deck, and watching the sun, this space will not get sun for nearly long enough according to sources that say a veggie garden requires 5 hours of sun per day - this spot doesn't begin to get sunshine until mid day... so we are now dis-assembling the box... and moving them to another space where the sun shines for more of the day, and longer in the year... (Good thing it didn't take him long to build it! ha ha!)
